“To Thine Own Self Be True” – Part One
From time to time, people resolve to make changes that will transform their lives and the lives of those around us for the better. We spend time writing down our goals. Then we go about making the changes needed with a firm and positive attitude. Then somewhere, somehow, someway, we find ourselves in the same place as before. All our goals and determination lay in ruins; once again, we have failed to follow through. We have once again allowed life’s challenges, friends who don’t share our goals, our own lack of focus and our natural inclination to “take the easy way out” to rob us of what could be…if only!!
How can we change this pattern? What can we do to combat those elements in our life that keep us from fulfilling our goals and dreams? That keeps us from becoming all that we can be.
Well, here’s a thought for you – something for you to consider when trying to figure things out. When we set goals, we are, in effect, making a promise – not to our families, our friends or associates. Still, we are making a promise to ourselves. Therein lies our first challenge. Pledges made to oneself are by far the easiest to break, yet, if we are to achieve our goals, they must become the most important ones to honour.
The reason for their importance is that they are the very essence of the confidence we need to carry us to our goals. Self-trust is at the heart of all success. After all, if you can’t trust yourself, who can you trust. Each promise you make to yourself that you fulfill leads to more self-trust and builds confidence.
At this point, we should stress that there is a vast difference between a goal not yet attained and a goal given up on.

The Mechanic and the Surgeon
A Lexus mechanic was removing a cylinder head from the motor of an LS460 when he spotted a well-known cardiac surgeon in his shop. The surgeon was waiting for the service manager. The mechanic called to the Doc, “Hey Doc, want to take a look at this?” The cardiac surgeon, a bit surprised, walked over to where the mechanic was working. The mechanic straightened up, wiped his hands on a rag, and asked, “So Doc, look at this engine. I opened its heart, took the valves out, repaired or replaced anything that was damaged, and then put everything back in. When I finished, it worked like new. So how is it that I make $48,000 a year and you make $1.7M when you and I are doing basically the same work? The cardiac surgeon paused, leaned over and whispered to the mechanic… “Try doing it with the engine running.”
Left Brain or Right Brain?
If you see the girl sitting and the boy with his arms around her neck, you are Left-Brained.
Look again. In reality, it’s just the opposite. Now make the Right-brain work.
You will see that it’s the boy who is sitting, wearing a black polo. The girl has her arms around the neck of the boy, and she is wearing blue jeans. Still not convinced? Then see who has hair in his arms and legs. Pretty interesting, isn’t it?
Our brain has two cerebral hemispheres that constantly interact, but each has specific functions. The left hemisphere breaks down problems and analyzes. the right is interested in everything and innovates. The ideal is to foster communication between these two parts of our brain. Sometimes our education, or temperament, will lead us to favour one side or the other.

Contemplating Retirement
As I was lying in bed pondering the world’s problems, I rapidly realized that I don’t really care. It’s the tortoise life for me.
- If walking/cycling is good for your health, the mailman would be immortal.
- A whale swims all day, only eats fish, drinks water, and is fat.
- A rabbit runs and hops and only lives 15 years.
- A tortoise doesn’t run and does nothing, yet it lives for 450 years.
And you tell me to exercise? I don’t think so.
I’m retired. Go around me!

Typographical Error
We apologize for the error in the last edition, in which we stated that “Mr. Fred Nicolme is a Defective in the Police Force.” This was a typographical error. We meant, of course, that Mr. Nicolme is a Detective in the Police Farce.”
