BG’s Positively Speaking
Powerful Quotes
As I read and research for ideas, concepts and perspectives on life, I find quotes that strike a chord with me. Some time back, I surfed the internet for quotes, printing off or saving some of the quotes that impacted me. Some of these quotes were much longer than the usual one- and two-line quotes we usually see; they speak more in-depth about their subject matter. Two of these quotes, printed here, are from people of vastly different backgrounds but speak to closely linked subjects: dreams, actions and courage. I came across them at different times, and it was not until later that I realized they were interlinked. Here they are:
Erma Bombeck:
“There are people who put their dreams in a little box and say, ‘Yes, I’ve got dreams, of course I’ve got dreams.’ Then they put the box away and bring it out once in a while to look in it, and yep, they’re still there. They are great dreams, but they never even get out of the box. It takes an uncommon amount of guts to put your dreams on the line, to hold them up and say, ”How good or how bad are they?’’ That’s where courage comes in.”
Ralph Waldo Emerson:
“Whatever you do, you need courage. Whatever course you decide upon, there is always someone to tell you you are wrong. There are always difficulties arising which tempt you to believe that your critics are right. To map out a course of action and follow it to the end, requires some of the same courage which a soldier needs.”
These authors speak to the need for courage to pursue our dreams. To stop procrastinating, put the negative naysayers in their place and take action. Release the power contained in your dream.
‘Action’ Turns A Dream Into Reality.
Now I Remember!
An elderly couple had dinner at another couple’s house. After eating, the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two gentlemen were talking, and one said, ‘Last night we went out to a new restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.’
The other man said, ‘What is the restaurant’s name?’ The first man thought and thought and finally said, ‘What is the name of that flower you give to someone you love? You know… The one that’s red and has thorns.’ ‘Do you mean a rose?’ ‘Yes, that’s the one,’ replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen and yelled, ‘Rose, what’s the name of that restaurant we went to last night?

The Words We Use
SCUTTLEBUTT: A scuttle is a hole in the side of a ship. It allowed light and air to pass below decks. A Butt was a wooden cask used to store provisions, including water. Many captains would have a hole halfway up the barrel and fill the bottom half with water. This would stop the crew from drinking a whole cask every day. The place to get a drink of water became known As “The Scuttled Butt .”Scuttlebutt became ‘the place to hear rumours while waiting for water.’

The Burglar
A woman had just returned to her home from an evening of church services when she was startled by an intruder. She caught the man in the act of robbing her home of its valuables and yelled, “Stop! Acts 2:38!” (Repent and be baptized, in the name of Jesus Christ, so that your sins may be forgiven.) The burglar stopped in his tracks. The woman calmly called the police and explained what she had done. As the officer cuffed the man, he asked, “Why did you just stand there? All the lady did was yell a scripture to you.” “Scripture?” replied the burglar. “She said she had an ax and two 38’s!”
Lost & Found
When Tofino BC resident Marcie Callewaert lost her wallet overboard into the waters of Clayoquot Sound, she thought she could find it. That the tides would eventually wash it back up on the shore. “I had really high hopes that before the end of the winter, it would wash in,” she says. After hiring a diver to search for her wallet at the bottom of the sound yielded no results, she was about to give up. But she held out a little longer, and it paid off.
Recently, she was walking her dogs on the shore and looking for signs of her wallet, which had been lost for almost a year. Shocked and excited, she realizes that sitting in the sand is her wallet amongst some sticks and debris. So, we have a real-life example of the universe returning that which could have been lost forever.
What Now?
A man walking down the street noticed a small boy trying to reach the doorbell of a house. Even when he jumped up, he couldn’t quite reach it. The man decided to help the boy, walked onto the porch and pushed the doorbell. He looked down at the boy, smiled and asked, “What now?” The boy answered, “Now we run like crazy!
The Last Word
If someone comes into your life and positively impacts you, be thankful that your paths crossed. And even if they can’t stay for some reason, be grateful that somehow they brought joy into your life, even if it was just for a short while. Life is change. People come and go, some stay, some don’t, and that’s okay. Remember the good times and smile that it happened.
