The Skills Of Leadership

Leadership skills can be learned by anyone willing to spend a little time investigating those skills. Listed here are twelve skills that the leader needs to start. Developing skills in only two or three of these areas will thrust you toward the leadership role. The rest will follow as you continue to grow and learn.

A Leader Of Others Needs…

Vision. to see the view ahead and help others to see it.

Direction. Towards the ultimate goal, a map for others to follow.

Focus. on channelling energy and resources toward the objective.

A positive attitude. Positive people achieve positive things.

Confidence. in the ability of yourself and impart it to those around you.

Caring. Caring for others and letting them see you care.

Persistence. A willingness to not give up when things are tough.

Courage. not to allow negative influences to prevail.

Faith that you and others have what it takes to get the job done.

Leading by example. People will follow those who take action.

Encouragement. Learn how to encourage others and give them confidence.

Motivation. Providing the reason why for yourself and those you lead.

To learn these skills, you will need some help. You can go to the local library and look up books, CDs & video’s on the subject of leadership and its related topics. One book I can recommend is “Developing The Leader Within You” by John Maxwell. You can also seek out someone who has the skills and knowledge and would be willing to mentor you. I have found that YouTube is also a good source of information and videos,

Back To The Olympics

On July 20, 1924, Johnny Weissmuller won Olympic gold medals in swimming for the 100m freestyle and the 4 x 200-metre relay. He went on to star in several movies. He was best known for playing Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan in Tarzan the Ape Man and its five sequels. Weissmuller was also known for having one of the best competitive swimming records of the 20th century.

   Canadian Eh!   

 Jay Silverheels

Born: May 26, 1919, on Six Nations Indian Reserve, Brantford, Ontario
Died: March 5, 1980, in Woodland Hills, California

Jay Silverheels, a full-blooded Mohawk, was a champion wrestler, a boxer, and a star lacrosse player with Canada’s national team before setting his sights on Hollywood. In 1948, he started to be noticed when John Huston cast him as Tom Osceola in Key Largo, but it was television, not the movies, that would bring him fame. In 1949, Silverheels landed the role of Tonto, the Lone Ranger’s faithful sidekick, and found himself forever typecast. Nevertheless, he continued to act in movies, appearing several times as Geronimo. In 1966 Silverheels founded the Indian Actors’ Workshop with Will Sampson. He offered free classes for Native Americans and Canadians who wanted to work in the industry. Unfortunately, Silverheels was partially paralyzed by a series of strokes in 1975 and died in 1980.

Born Harold Jay Smith, Silverheels legally changed his name in 1971. He was the symbolic Indian to an entire generation, but, more importantly, he was an inspiration for aboriginal actors and an activist to improve the portrayal of Native peoples in television and the movies.

The Four Goldbergs

The four Goldberg brothers, Lowell, Norman, Hiram, and Max, invented and developed the first automobile air-conditioner. On July 17, 1946, the temperature in Detroit was 97 degrees. The four brothers walked into Henry Ford’s office. They sweet-talked his secretary into telling him that four gentlemen were there with the most exciting innovation in the auto industry since the electric starter. Henry was curious and invited them into his office. They refused and instead asked that he come out to the parking lot to their car. Finally, they persuaded him to get into the car, which was about 130 degrees, turned on the air conditioner, and cooled the car off immediately. Ford got very excited and invited them back to the office, where he offered them $3 million for the patent. The brothers refused, saying they would settle for $2 million. Still, they wanted a label, “The Goldberg Air-Conditioner,” on the dashboard of each car in which it was installed. Now Ford was a stubborn man, and there was no way he would put the Goldberg’s name on two million Fords. They haggled back and forth for about two hours and finally agreed on $4million and that just their first names would be shown. And so to this day, all Ford air conditioners have Lo, Norm, Hi, and Max on the controls. So, now you know (Or Do You?).
