Attitude – An Important Asset
The outcome of any situation we face is mainly determined by the attitude with which we approach the situation. It is often said that our attitude is the most critical asset; if this is so, a good result requires a good attitude from the start. A bad result will invariably be the outcome of a bad attitude. With that in mind, I would like to relay some facts that came to my attention.
Robert Haff International, a consulting firm, surveyed 100 large companies. They asked these companies the primary reason for firing employees. The results were…
- Incompetence (about 32%)
- Inability to get along with others (18%)
- Dishonesty/Lying (13%)
- A negative attitude (12%)
- Failure/refusal to follow instructions (8%)
- Lack of motivation (8%)
- All other reasons (9%)
Looking at these figures, we find that reasons 2-6 are all attitude controlled, and not one refers to the person’s lack of skill or knowledge. Approximately 59% of people lose their jobs because of a destructive or undisciplined attitude. As if to underscore the Haff survey, the Carnegie Institute concluded in a different study that only 15% of success is attributed to technical or skill training. 85% of success is gained by the person’s attitude. When we adjust our attitude, it allows us to think with a greater degree of clarity. Negativity clouds our thought and reasoning processes, making us unable to see our way ahead. It stops us from envisioning a better outcome for the challenges we face. If you’re not where you want to be. If you are not getting the desired results, look at your attitude…

Dalmatian’s Duties
A nursery school teacher was delivering a minivan full of kids home one day when a fire truck zoomed past. Sitting in the front seat of the fire truck was a Dalmatian dog. The children began discussing the dog’s duties. “They use him to keep crowds back,” said one youngster.
“No,” said another. “He’s just for good luck.”
A third child brought the argument to a close with this comment: “They use the dogs,” she said firmly, “to find the fire hydrants.”
Slow Pokes!
Jack complained about his journey to work on the subway, “It happens every day. I get stuck behind these really slow people on the stairs. The thing that puzzles me is how they keep beating me to the stairs!”
A Valued Opinion
A new playwright extended a special invitation to a well-known critic to attend his new play. The critic accepted the invitation but slept through the whole performance. The irate playwright asked the critic, “How could you do that, knowing how much I valued your opinion?” “Sir, said the critic, “My sleeping is my opinion.”

Bats Alive! According to a Vancouver Sun report, after moving into a Vancouver condominium apartment in June, Miles Nurse and Jennifer Plomt discovered that (A) the unit was infested with bats and (B) British Columbia law prohibits disturbing the animals during their breeding period, meaning they probably will not be removed until the about the end of August. The downsides of sharing your space with roughly 80 bats include (among other things): Multiple rounds of rabies shots, lost sleep due to high-pitched nocturnal squealing, and the surprise of finding the occasional bat pup in one’s bed.
Some Mothers Do Have Them! In May, police in Manchester, New Hampshire, arrested 49-year-old James Coldwell, who they said had robbed a local bank several days earlier while dressed as a tree. Investigators said Coldwell’s features were easily discernible on security video despite his disguise, which consisted of branches duct-taped to his shirt and head.
