BG’s Positively Speaking

The Enemy Within

The Victor Hugo novel “93” tells of the crew aboard a sailing ship caught in a storm at sea. The ship is tossing and pitching in all directions, causing apprehension to the sailors. They hear banging from the deck containing cannons. A cannon had broken loose and was being flung from one side of the ship to the other. Each time the boat pitched, the gun would crash into the hull. If they could not secure the cannon, it would break through the hull and sink the ship. The sailors realized the greatest danger they faced was not from the storm outside or the sea but from inside the boat. Their enemy was within, not from the outside.

As with the ship, in life, our greatest enemy is one that lies within us, the one contained in our minds. We can conquer the storms around us if we can take control of our thoughts. Each day we wrestle with doubts and fears. With the “should I” or “should I not.” With the fears of failure or “what will people think.” This inability to take control leads us to procrastinate; this causes inaction. When confronted by life’s challenges, inaction means that we lose the battle with the storm. The storm will not defeat us, but our lack of action will.

The sailors in Victor Hugo’s story recognized that they had to face the danger of the loose cannon; doing nothing would result in losing all hands. By taking action, they could probably save the ship, which they did. Doing nothing was not an option.

To be VICTORS, not VICTIMS, we need to …………….

• Recognize the enemy    • Conquer our thoughts and fears     • Take action.

It is better to act and lose than to do nothing and guarantee the loss.

Action Creates Results

How Sweet It Is!

A married couple was in a terrible accident, and the man’s face was severely burned. The doctor informed the husband that they couldn’t graft his skin as he was too skinny. The wife offered to donate some of her skin. However, the doctor informs them that the only suitable skin would have to come from her buttocks. After discussing the situation, they decided to go ahead. The couple agreed that they would never tell anyone where the skin came from. The doctor also agreed to keep the secret. After all, it was a delicate matter. When the surgery was completed, everyone was astounded at the man’s new face. He looked younger and more handsome than ever, and his skin looked so soft. One day, overcome with emotion at his wife’s sacrifice, the man said, “My dear, I just want to thank you for everything you have done for me. How can I possibly repay you?” “My Darling,” she replied, “I get all the thanks I need every time I see your mother kiss your cheeks.”

Italy’s Submerged Village

A 14th-century church tower peeking above the water offers an insight into the past here at Lake Reschen, in northern Italy. Until the mid-20th century, this site in the Italian Alps was home to the village of Graun, which included some 163 homes. But then, in 1939, an electric company announced plans to build a dam and an artificial lake here, which would submerge Graun and part of the town of Reschen. Despite public outcry and delays due to World War II, the villages were eventually submerged in 1950. Today, the church steeple attracts tourists, especially in winter, when the lake is frozen, and visitors can walk across.
