BG’s Positively Speaking

Inspiration and Motivation

Some time back, a reader asked me to write about this topic. In this update, I will expand on my original thoughts. The truth is that these two words have multiple related derivations. They are also closely connected while still retaining their separate meaning. I have researched what others have written about these two words and their ‘connectedness.’ My research has led me to the conclusion that, when used together, they can have a significantly more significant impact.

Motivation: comes from the inside; it’s the inner drive and desire to take action.

Inspiration: ignites the desire to take action along with ideas, creativity, and passion.

Motivation often arises from within, driven by needs, desires, rewards, or consequences. At the same time, inspiration is frequently derived from external sources or experiences. You can have all the inspiration in the world, but without Motivation, you have a dream that is going nowhere. You can have the most inspired concept, but without Motivation, you will just spin your wheels.

INSPIRATION without MOTIVATION = NO RESULTS
MOTIVATION without INSPIRATION = NO RESULTS

Individually, the two words have a distinct and separate role to play in the success of any endeavour. However, they are also entwined, like the strands of a rope. Bringing together

the two elements of success creates the strength that will result in the desired outcome. Of course, there are many other elements to success, but without these two, there’s

no focus, drive, direction or action. There is only confusion and frustration.

INSPIRATION is the idea, the dream of what we want to achieve.

MOTIVATION is the engine that drives us into action to realize our inspiration.

Inspiration + Motivation = Achievement.

The Best Of The Best

“Who’s on First?”, written and performed by the comedy team of Abbott and Costello, is considered by many as the best comedy sketch ever written. The sketch revolves around Abbott identifying the players on a baseball team for Costello. However, the players’ names can simultaneously serve as the basis for questions. Although it is commonly known as “Who’s on First?” they often referred to it simply as “Baseball.” The pair performed the routine hundreds of times in their careers. Although it was rarely performed precisely the same way twice, the routine follows a definite structure, and their timing was always spot on.

Three Envelopes

Sometime after Sidney died, his widow, Tillie, could finally speak about what a thoughtful and wonderful man her late husband had been. “Sidney thought of everything,” she said. “Just before he died, Sidney called me to his bedside. And handed me three envelopes. `Tillie,’ he told me, ‘I have put all my last wishes in these three envelopes. After I am dead, please open them and do what I have instructed. Then I can rest in peace.”

“What was in the envelopes?” her friends asked. “The first envelope contained $5,000 with a note, ‘Please use this money to buy a nice casket.’ So I bought a beautiful mahogany casket with such a comfortable lining that I know Sidney is resting very comfortably.

“The second envelope contained $10,000 with a note, ‘Please use this for a nice funeral.’

I arranged a very dignified funeral for Sidney and bought all his favourite foods for everyone attending.” “And the third envelope?” asked her friends.

“The third envelope contained $25,000 with a note, ‘Please use this to buy a nice stone.’

Holding her hand in the air and showing off her ten-carat diamond ring., Tillie said, “So, do you like my stone?”

OOOPS!

Weird Science

Scientists in Japan are at it again. The Japanese tech company Kirin Holdings has released the new Elecispoon. This metal-and-plastic, battery-powered spoon will improve human taste buds’ perception of salt, allowing them to use less salt in their foods. Overconsumption of salt is a health issue in Japan. The tip of the spoon’s bowl transfers an electric charge to the food it touches and generates an electric field around the tongue, which causes sodium ions to bond together. The spoon, which sells for $128, has four intensity settings.

The Gentle Giraffe

Paisley Toten, 2, was riding in a pickup bed through the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose, Texas, with her parents when their interaction with the animals took an unexpected turn. The family stopped their truck to feed a giraffe. The giraffe nibbled on Paisley’s shirt instead, lifting her several feet into the air. When Paisley’s mom shouted, the giraffe dropped the toddler into her mother’s arms, leaving her unhurt. After the incident, the park changed its rules to disallow riding in an open truck bed. Paisley got a stuffed giraffe from the gift shop for her trouble.
