BG’s Positively Speaking

Life’s Lessons

Introduction

The places and experiences from which life teaches always amaze me.   David Frey, CEO of Marketing Best Practices, outlined a few lessons he learned after running the Athens Marathon. Here they are;

  1. It was hard, really hard, but so worth it. Everything good in life usually requires hard work and dedication.
  2. If you don’t take time to train and put in the time before the race, you will pay dearly during the race. Practice makes perfect. People with skills didn’t start that way. They perfected those skills through practice.
  3. You must master long runs to get your body used to the pounding. Twenty percent of your actions produce 80 percent of your results- the 80/20 rule in action. The long runs are the twenty percent.
  4. Anyone can run a marathon with the proper training and the right attitude. We can all succeed if we are dedicated and committed to developing the right attitude, no matter our situation.
  5. Get a coach, I did. Coaches help us see the forest from the trees and the trees from the forest. No one gets there on their own.
  6. Have a “running buddy” who will encourage, cheer and inspire you. Surround yourself with successful people. It is said that your income will equal the average of the five people closest to you.

Footnote.

And I thought that marathons were just a test of physical endurance. As I said at the beginning, It’s incredible where the lessons we need to learn about life can be found. We can all learn from what happens to us and around us. We need to …

Be Aware, Be Open and Be Receptive!

Fun At The Zoo!

Little Johnny wanted to go to the zoo and pestered his parents for days. Finally, his mother talked his reluctant father into taking him. “So, how was it?” his mother asked when they returned home. “Great,” Little Johnny replied. “Did you and your father have a good time?” asked his mother. “Yeah, Daddy especially liked it,” exclaimed Little Johnny excitedly, especially when one of the animals came home at 30 to 1!”

Where In The World?

Do you recognize this medieval bridge and where it is located?
(Hover or click for answer)

It is the only remaining bridge of its kind in Florence. None of the others survived the ravages of WWII. Here in North America, we wouldn’t expect to see a shopping mall at the top of the many bridges that span our rivers and lakes. But in the Europe of medieval times, it would not be unusual for a second or even third level to be built on top of a bridge. Often, they would be wider than the original bridge and house various businesses, including blacksmiths, clothiers and even butchers. Homes and living accommodations would also be found in the mix. Initially built in the 1200s to allow people to cross from one side of the Arno River to the other, it was rebuilt after a flood in 1345. A 1565 upgrade added a second story to the arch bridge. The bridge has a long and fascinating history.

Incompetent Criminals

The Peruvian thieves made international news headlines after they pulled off one of the dumbest heists in history – 220 sneakers from various brands. The crime occurred at a sports goods store in Huancayo, central Peru. Three men cut the padlocks at the back of the store and stole three large crates filled with sneaker boxes from various brands. The thieves didn’t realize that all the shoe boxes they stole contained only sneakers for the right foot. The owner had prepared the three crates for display at a local sports goods fair. It is suspected that the thieves have hidden the crates. There is no way to sell them on the black market without the matching ‘left’ sneakers.

A Different Time

They had been up in the attic together doing some cleaning. The kids uncovered an old manual typewriter and asked, ‘Hey Mom, what’s this?’

‘Oh, that’s an old typewriter,’ she answered, thinking that would satisfy their curiosity.

‘Well what does it do?’ they asked.

‘I’ll show you,’ she said, finding a blank sheet of letter-size paper. She rolled the paper into the typewriter and began striking the keys, leaving black letters on the page.

‘WOW!’ they exclaimed, ‘That’s really cool.! But how does it work like that? Where do you plug it in?’ ‘There is no plug,’ she answered. ‘It doesn’t need a plug.’  ‘Then where do you put the batteries?’ they persisted. ‘It doesn’t need batteries either.’ she continued.

‘Wow! This is so cool!’ they exclaimed. ‘Someone should have invented this a long time ago!’

Paddy went to St. Mary’s Hospital for major surgery.
