BG’s Positively Speaking
Living and Learning
Living and learning are intertwined aspects of our existence. Much emphasis has been placed on the need to continue learning. Learning is essential to our growth and the fullness of our lives. However, there is more to learning than books, school and college. You see, our life is a continuous journey of experiences, each offering a lesson that helps to shape who we are and what we become. From the moment we are born, we begin to learn, first from our parents and surroundings, then from our teachers and our own experiences and interactions with the world.
Living a full life means embracing every moment, whether filled with joy, sorrow, success, or failure. Each experience, good or bad, contributes to our growth. On the other hand, learning is the process of gaining knowledge, skills, and understanding from these experiences. It is not confined to formal education but extends to every aspect of life.
The beauty of living and learning lies in their reciprocity. As we live, we learn, and as we learn, we enhance our ability to live more meaningfully. This cycle fosters resilience, adaptability, and wisdom. It encourages us to be curious, ask questions, and seek out new experiences. It is not enough to just learn about life; we must experience it.
Living and learning are about being open to change and growth. They remind us that life is not just about reaching a destination but the journey itself. Embracing this mindset can lead to a richer, more fulfilling life.

Paying For His Food
There was a poor old Irish cobbler whose shop was next door to a very upscale French restaurant. Every day at lunchtime, Mike, the Irish gent, would go out the back of his shop and eat his soda bread and maybe a kipper or piece of Irish blue cheese while smelling the wonderful odours from the restaurant’s kitchen. One morning, the Irishman was surprised to receive an invoice in the mail from the adjoining restaurant for “enjoyment of food .”Mystified, he marched right over to the restaurant to point out that he had not bought a thing from them. The manager said, “You’re enjoying our food, so you should pay us for it.” The Irishman refused to pay, and the restaurant took him to court. At the hearing, the judge asked the restaurant to present their side of the case. The manager said, “Every day, this man comes and sits outside our kitchen and smells our food while eating his. Clearly, we are providing added value to his poor food, and we deserve to be compensated for it.” The judge turned to Mike and said, “What do you have to say to that?” The old Irishman didn’t say anything but smiled, stuck his hand in his pocket, and rattled the few coins he had inside.
The judge asked him, “What is the meaning of that?” The Irishman replied with a mile-wide grin, “I’m paying for the smell of his food with the sound of my money.”

Two members of a criminal faction in Ceará, Brazil, with long criminal records for drug trafficking, robbery, and murder, were caught trying to escape the Itaitinga 3 prison in Fortaleza, Brazil, wearing very basic female disguises. The two men wore long black-hair wigs, pink skirts, and white t-shirts and even had improvised breasts to fool the guards. They tried mingling with real women at the end of conjugal visiting hours to reduce the risk of getting noticed by the guards, but their sloppy get-ups were quickly spotted, and the two were detained before they set foot outside the prison.

Scotland And The Unicorn
Unicorns have been linked to Scotland for centuries. In Celtic mythology, the unicorn was a symbol of purity and innocence, as well as masculinity and power. Tales of dominance and chivalry associated with the unicorn may be why it was chosen as Scotland’s national animal. While the animal is mythological, the ideals it represents make it a perfect fit as the national animal for Scotland, and like this proud beast, Scots would fight to remain unconquered.
William I first used the unicorn on the Scottish royal coat of arms in the 12th century. In the 15th century, when King James III was in power, gold coins even appeared with the unicorn on them. When Scotland and England unified under the reign of James VI of Scotland in 1603, the Scottish Royal Arms had two unicorns supporting a shield. When James VI became James I of England and Ireland, he replaced the unicorn on the left of the shield with the national animal of England, the lion, to show that the countries were indeed united.

Her friend said, “I don’t know. I haven’t seen him since.”
