BG’s Positively Speaking
As Through A Rear View Mirror
When we look in a mirror, we look at ourselves and pay little or no attention to what is behind us. Let us reverse that and look at what is behind us, as in a rearview mirror. Look at the past year in your personal and work/business life. What worked for you? What didn’t? Did you reach your objectives for the year? Where are you relative to where you want to be? Did you really give it all you had.? Make notes on both the questions and your answers to them.
Next, examine your notes. Ask if you were responsible for anything that didn’t go how you wanted. Take a close look at yourself, your relationships, your actions, and your words, and continue taking notes.
With the notes in front of us, we can now analyze what happened during the previous year and what we did or didn’t do that led to our current outcomes. Now, we can eliminate those things that didn’t result in the ending we sought. Our new plans will include those things that did work and that we can build on to strengthen the future.
The final step is to take action on what you have discovered. Action is the key to putting your newfound knowledge to work for you.
If this all seems over the top, successful lives are built on a large percentage of analysis and a smaller percentage of the skills needed to perform the work to be done. Author, speaker, and leadership teacher John C. Maxwell takes time during the end of each year to do just that. As further evidence that this works, read “How I raised Myself from Failure to Success in Selling” by Frank Bettger.
